Erhard Rostlund was born in Sweden on January 21, 1900. He immigrated to the United States in 1921 and graduated from High School in Los Angeles, in 1924. He earned his B.A. in anthropology in 1934 from the University of California, Berkeley. He received his M.A. in geography from the school in 1946 and his Ph.D. in 1951 at which point he was appointed Assistant Professor of Geography. His primary research focus was on the use of the animal resources of North America by its native people. Rostlund was appointed Associate Professor in 1957 and died at his home in Berkeley on July 13, 1961.
